How to Get Out of Jury Duty and Into Jail

A Cape Cod, Massachusetts man found a way to get out of jury duty. Now, Daniel Ellis could face perjury charges. According to the Associated Press, Ellis wrote, in a jury questionnaire, that he was a racial and sexual bigot. When Judge Gary Nickerson questioned him he responded that not only was he a racist, he was “frequently found to be a liar too.” When Nickerson asked if he was lying now, Ellis answered: “Well, I don’t know. I might be.” Nickerson suggest he had the distinct impression Ellis was trying to avoid jury duty, to which Ellis said, “that’s true.”

Ellis was taken into custody and released later the same morning. Judge Gary Nickerson told Ellis that “in 32 years of service in courtrooms, as a prosecutor, as a defense attorney and now as a judge, I have quite frankly never confronted such a brazen situation of an individual attempting to avoid juror service.”

I think we’ve all wanted to try this. I guess this strategy might just carry some risks.
